How To Increase Signal Strength On A Netgear Router

If you are not satisfied with the current range of your Netgear Router and you also think that the range can be extended by making some changes into the router, then you are absolutely right. Follow the tips given in the post to find out how to enhance the range of your Netgear Router.

If your computer or mobile device strives to locate or maintain a strong connection to the wireless network, Netgear router may not be generating a strong or stable signal. The performance of the device depends on a number of things, such as the model and year of manufacturing of the router, the place where you have installed it and finally, your network configuration. If you want to fix Wi-Fi connectivity, then make sure to upgrade hardware or firmware from your Netgear router, which you can do by making changes to your wireless frequency or by installing one more network equipment.

Change wireless channel

Most of the Netgear router models operate in a 2.4 GHz band, the range shared with many other electronic gadgets including baby monitors, microwave ovens and cordless phones. These devices may impede the performance of the wireless network by interfering with or decreasing the strength of the internet signal.
You can try to change the wireless channel of your router or switch to another frequency range in order to minimize the interference because doing either of the two will allow the router to communicate over a different signal range. Log onto your Netgear router followed by clicking on the "advanced" tab. As you do so, select "Setup" from the main menu followed by selecting "Wireless Setup" from the submenu. Under the wireless network (2.4GHz B / G / N), select a new channel, or take a look at the Wireless Network Name (SSID) field (5 GHz A / N) to find out the name of the network operating in the 5 GHz.

Update hardware

Depending on the model of your router, you may be able to get high gain antennas in place of standard antennas. These antennas are omnidirectional, which means they transmit a wireless signal in all directions, which in turn leads to an increase in the effective range of your device. In the majority of cases, the installation is easy, as you just need to unscrew the old antennas from the Netgear router followed by inserting the new antennas into place. Before purchasing a new set of antennas, make sure to unscrew the existing antennas to ensure that an upgrade is possible.

Update Firmware

Netgear routers feature firmware, which is a kind of software built into the device that is responsible for implementing and controlling the operation of wireless and network protocols. If you have purchased a Netgear router and its been several months or years that you are using it, then, you will see that the performance of the unit can be enhanced by upgrading the firmware to the most recent version.
To determine if your Netgear Router is eligible for an upgrade, you need to log in to your router's admin page followed by clicking “advanced” tab and choosing “Administration” from the main menu. As you do so, select "Firmware Update" from the submenu followed by clicking "Check" to search the database for a new version and finally, clicking "Yes" or "Update," if applicable, so as to install the firmware to your Netgear Router.

Install a Wi-Fi Extender Network

If the aforementioned solutions do not boost the wireless signal or if you are not able to upgrade your Router to a new set of antennas, then you will have to bring a Wi-Fi Extender into the picture. Install a Wi-Fi extender to your Netgear router in order to expand your wireless signal. The responsibility of a Wi-Fi Extender is to broaden the transmission range of the access point.
For installing a Wi-Fi extender, you need to connect the extender to the PC followed by inserting your installation disc into the CD drive. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the Wi-Fi Extender to your access point followed by disconnecting the Wi-Fi extender from your computer at the conclusion of the process.
